Christine Shively - Passage to India and Beyond One day class: Costume basics and embellishment inspired by the Genius of India. Improvisation with fabric; layering, manipulation using simple shapes. This class will open with several short improvisation exercises that will set the tone for playful experimentation. The inspiring aspects of India involving color, pattern and embellishment will be some of the elements of this class. The student can bring a standing figure that they wish to use as the draping model, or the doll created from the first class: Passage to India. The Spirit of India will open the doors for students to explore the many possibilities for clothing and embellishment. The student will prepare several clothing items in advance. The clothing should fit a 17 to 18 inch standing figure. A jacket and bodice will be used as the springboard for the student. Beading and embellishment of the items to create something that evokes India and goes beyond is a main focus of the class. How do we begin with a core inspiration…in this case India….and then go beyond those elements to create something unique, yet retain the flavor of the core idea? Class participation in the adaptations will be instrumental in the exploration of the costuming possibilities. A flat sleeve shape, and wing shape will be added to the basic elements of the folded and draped elements that are typical of the costuming of India. Samples of classic beaded and wired embellishments will be provided. The student will deconstruct the items in order to learn how to create similar items. A new and inventive hair construction that has sculptural qualities will be demonstrated in class. HOMEWORK for Passage to India and Beyond: The student will receive a pattern in advance of the class. A class letter will be provided so that the student knows the items to prepare in advance. Homework is essential for making progress in class. A Jacket, sleeves and bodice front and wing shape will be prepared in advance. Extra fabric that will be used for folding, layering and draping will be brought to class. Sewing the clothing items is recommended before class. The student is encouraged to ask questions if an item is unclear, in order to avoid any confusion on the prep work. No sewing machine required for the class because that is accomplished ahead of time. Gathering of beads, and other items for the embellishment phase of the class is encouraged. This class is for Intermediate and advanced Doll makers. Pattern for the class: $10.00 |
